Offered here is an original Vintage Aircraft Oxygen Diluter Demand Regulator, believed to be designed for use in the legendary B-17 Flying Fortress and other high-altitude U.S. Army Air Forces aircraft of the World War II era. This regulator is in good condition, making it a rare and desirable item for aviation collectors, restorers, and military museums.

Historical Background

During World War II, American heavy bombers like the B-17 operated at altitudes exceeding 25,000 feet—well above the threshold for safe, unaided human respiration. To support aircrew in these extreme environments, aircraft were equipped with oxygen systems, including diluter demand regulators, which automatically mixed ambient air with pure oxygen depending on altitude, conserving oxygen supply while ensuring proper crew function.

The diluter demand regulator was a critical safety component. As altitude increased, the regulator gradually increased the proportion of oxygen delivered, maintaining safe partial pressure and preventing hypoxia. These systems were standard issue across U.S. bomber and reconnaissance fleets, including the B-17, B-24, B-25, and later B-29 bombers.

This regulator represents a vital part of wartime aviation life support technology, reflecting the ingenuity and engineering behind long-range strategic bombing missions over Europe and the Pacific.
