US Army WWII M3 Grant M4 Sherman Tank M5 High-Speed Tractor Suspension Spring

This is a genuine WWII (dated 1944) volute spring for the M4 Medium Tank ("Sherman") that utilized the Vertical Volute Spring Suspension system (VVSS). The Sherman had three bogie units per side of tank, and there were two of these volute springs per bogie unit, so that made 6 volute springs per side of tank, 12 volute springs total per tank suspension system. A volute spring is made from flat spring steel, twisted into a cone shape. These springs can handle heavier loads, while compressing more, than a conventional coil spring. These springs are ideal for heavy applications, like a tank. These volute springs had a load rating of 9,000 pounds per spring! This particular volute spring, part number C-73927, was also used as the trailing idler spring for the M5 series high-speed tractor, as well as one of the suspension springs on the M3 Grant tank. The spring also had the part number G104-03-06910 for the VVSS Sherman tank application, and part number G81-01-72810 for the M3 Grant tank application. This massive spring is over 12-inches in length, 7-inches at its largest diameter, and weighs 48 pounds!
