This inert 40mm M781 Low-Velocity Target-Practice round is a full-size example of one of the most widely used American grenade-launcher training cartridges. It is assembled with the correct M212 cartridge case and represents the ammunition used to train military personnel on the M79 and M203 40mm grenade launchers. This example is completely inert and intended only for collecting, study, and display.

M212 Cartridge Case
The M212 is a hollow, two-chamber plastic cartridge case developed for low-velocity 40mm ammunition. In the service cartridge, a small blank cartridge was installed in the base to provide the primer and propelling charge. The two-chamber design controlled the pressure before gas entered the larger chamber and propelled the projectile from the launcher. The M212 case is a key part of the M781’s distinctive construction.
How the M781 Worked
When a live M781 was fired, gas from the propelling charge entered the case’s low-pressure chamber and pushed the projectile through the rifled launcher barrel. The rotating band engaged the rifling and stabilized the projectile in flight. Upon striking the target, the fragile nose broke open and released a visible cloud of yellow-orange dye. This gave the shooter and instructor immediate feedback without using a high-explosive warhead.
Weapon Applications
Army ammunition manuals list the M781 for the standalone M79 grenade launcher and the M203 launcher fitted beneath an M16-series rifle. The M79 entered American service during the early 1960s and became an important infantry weapon during the Vietnam War. The M203 was developed later to combine a rifle and grenade launcher in one weapon, giving the grenadier greater flexibility. It served beneath M16 rifles and later M4 carbines in training and combat around the world.
Training History
The M781 allowed soldiers and Marines to practice range estimation, sight adjustment, loading, aiming, and firing with the same basic weapon used for combat ammunition. Its visible impact marker helped instructors correct each shooter’s aim. The round supported individual qualification, unit exercises, and predeployment training while reducing the risks and costs associated with high-explosive ammunition.
Performance
Army data lists a service muzzle velocity of approximately 76 meters per second, or 250 feet per second, with a maximum range of about 400 meters. These figures describe the original functional training cartridge only. This inert example cannot be fired and has no represented ballistic performance.
