Weapon-System History

Development of the T98 started in 1948, using the light-tank family that led to the M41 Walker Bulldog. Testing brought changes that produced the T98E1. Its enclosed turret provided overhead protection, while its tracked chassis allowed the artillery to move with armored formations. The vehicle was standardized as the M52 in November 1955.
History of Use
This manual was published during the Korean War, before the vehicle received its M52 designation. The M52 later served with U.S. Army artillery units during the 1950s and was eventually replaced by the M108 and M109. Vehicles also went to NATO allies and Jordan. Jordanian M52s saw combat during the 1967 Six-Day War, giving this weapon family a service history that extended beyond its American use.
