This June 1965 manual dates from the opening years of major U.S. combat operations in Vietnam. Artillery ammunition crews placed the correct M63 socket over the fuze and turned its movable cap clockwise until the ordered time appeared on the fuze scale. Proper setting was important because an incorrect time could cause the projectile to function too early, too late, or at an unsafe distance. The Army later published TM 9-1290-329-34 for the same M63 set in January 1972, showing that the equipment remained in the military maintenance system.
