About the M60-Series Reflex Sights
These helicopter sights projected an illuminated aiming pattern onto a transparent beam splitter in front of the operator. The pilot could view the target through the glass while also seeing the aiming mark. Once the sight and weapons were properly aligned, the operator aimed the helicopter to place the reticle over the target. Major sight components included the beam splitter, lamp, filter, support, mounting hardware, and adjustment parts.
Model Development
The XM60 and XM60E1 came from the development period of the sight system. The “XM” prefix marked equipment being tested or prepared for standard Army use, while “E1” identified an engineering change to the basic model. The M60A1 was a later configuration within the same sight family. Covering all three models in one manual helped Army maintenance units support older and updated sights still present in the supply system.
Weapon-System History
The M60 sight family was part of the rapid growth of armed helicopter systems during the Vietnam War. Period Army manuals show the XM60 series used with the XM156 multiarmament mount on UH-1B and UH-1C helicopters. That installation could carry fixed 2.75-inch rocket launchers on both sides of the aircraft. Since the launchers did not turn toward the target, the pilot aimed the complete helicopter while using the reflex sight as the visual reference.
History of Use
During rocket attacks, the sight was aligned with the helicopter and boresighted to the launchers. An adjustable reticle helped the pilot use the proper aiming point for the selected attack setting. The sight could be placed in an operating position when needed and moved out of the way for storage. Its illuminated display allowed fast aiming without blocking the pilot’s view outside the cockpit. The March 1973 date places this manual near the end of major U.S. combat operations in Vietnam, when the Army still needed dependable maintenance support for its UH-1 gunship equipment.
