How the M25 Mount Worked
The M25 held and supported an M12A7C or M12A7G Panoramic Telescope on the howitzer carriage. The gunner used the panoramic telescope to set direction and deflection for indirect fire against targets that could not be seen from the gun position.
Weapon-System Application
The M25 was part of the fire-control equipment used on the M1A1 and M1A2 155mm Howitzers, which were later redesignated as members of the M114 series. The mount provided a stable connection between the carriage and panoramic telescope. This allowed the crew to aim from firing data supplied by the fire-direction center while the separate elevation and quadrant equipment controlled the angle of the cannon tube.
Historical Background
The M114 family began as the 155mm Howitzer M1, which entered production during World War II. Improved versions were designated M1A1 and M2 before the weapon became the M114 under the Army’s 1962 designation system. The howitzer provided medium-artillery fire support with greater range and shell weight than standard 105mm weapons. The M25 mount came from the same World War II-era fire-control system and remained supported as long as these howitzers stayed in service.
History of Use
M114-series howitzers served with American forces during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. They were used for high-explosive, smoke, illumination, and other indirect-fire missions. The weapon also served with many allied countries and remained in use after newer U.S. artillery systems began replacing it. This March 1971 manual reflects continued Army support for the M25 mount during the later service life of the M114 family.
