How the Infinity Sight Worked
Infinity Sight 8635466 projected an illuminated aiming pattern into the viewing window of the M32C periscope. The projected pattern included a 20-mil circle used for aiming the vehicle’s coaxial machine gun. Controls allowed the crew to adjust elevation, azimuth, and light intensity. The sight included optical, electrical, and mechanical parts that required accurate identification during repair and replacement.
Weapon and Vehicle Application
The infinity sight was used with the M32C gunner’s periscope on the M728 Combat Engineer Vehicle. The M32C served as the gunner’s secondary direct-fire sight for the vehicle’s 165mm M135 demolition gun and as the primary direct sight for its coaxial 7.62mm machine gun. The separate M105F telescope was the main direct-fire sight for the 165mm gun, so the infinity sight should not be confused with the primary demolition-gun sight.
Historical Background
This manual was issued while the M728 was still being prepared for Army service. Developed from the M60-series tank, the M728 combined an armored chassis with a dozer blade, winch, crane boom, and 165mm demolition gun. It entered service during the mid-1960s and supported combat engineers in clearing obstacles, breaking fortified positions, and moving debris. M728 vehicles later served during the Vietnam War and Gulf War. The infinity sight remained part of the documented fire-control system for many years, making this manual a useful record of Cold War armored-engineering equipment.
