How the Infinity Sight Worked
Infinity Sight 8635466 projected an illuminated aiming pattern into the unity window of the M32C gunner’s periscope. The projected pattern included a 20-mil circle used when aiming the vehicle’s coaxial machine gun. Elevation and azimuth controls allowed the sight to be aligned, while a light control adjusted the brightness of the aiming pattern.
Weapon and Vehicle Application
The infinity sight was part of the fire-control equipment used on the M728 Combat Engineer Vehicle. The M32C periscope served as the gunner’s secondary direct-fire sight for the 165mm M135 demolition gun and as the primary direct sight for the coaxial 7.62mm machine gun. The separate M105F telescope was the main direct-fire sight for the 165mm gun, so the infinity sight should not be confused with the primary demolition-gun sight.
Historical Background
The M728 was developed from the M60-series tank and entered Army service during the mid-1960s. It combined armor protection with a dozer blade, winch, crane boom, and 165mm demolition gun. Combat engineers used the vehicle to clear obstacles, break fortified positions, move debris, and support armored units. M728 vehicles served during the Vietnam War and Gulf War. The January 1970 manual reflects continued Army support for the infinity sight after the M728 entered regular service.
