About the M127 Articulated Telescope
The M127 was a primary gunner’s fire-control telescope for the M551 Sheridan Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle. It replaced the earlier M119 telescope in later Sheridan production.
The M127 offered selectable 8-power or 12-power magnification. Its approximate field of view was 8 degrees at 8 power and 5.33 degrees at 12 power. A selector lever allowed the gunner to change magnification based on target distance and mission needs.
The telescope could display separate reticle patterns for conventional ammunition and the MGM-51 Shillelagh missile. Reticle selection was controlled electrically, helping the gunner switch ammunition types without physically changing optical parts.
M127A1 and M127E1
The M127A1 was an improved version associated with the M551A1 Sheridan. The M127E1 designation refers to the experimental form of this updated configuration.
The M127A1 included added protection against damaging laser light. This improvement became important as laser rangefinders and other laser-based equipment entered wider military use.
This manual covers both the standard M127 and the M127A1/M127E1 configuration. It is therefore useful for identifying maintenance differences between the original and improved models.
Hanger Assembly
The manual also covers the Hanger Assembly, FSN 1240-906-7945. This was specialized maintenance equipment used to support the telescope during higher-level servicing.
The hanger assembly was not the operational M149 telescope mount installed in the vehicle. It was a separate maintenance fixture associated with repair work on the articulated telescope.
M551 Sheridan Application
The M127 telescope worked with the M149 Telescope Mount and checksight as part of the Sheridan’s fire-control system. It was mounted in alignment with the 152mm M81 gun/launcher.
The M81 could fire conventional ammunition and the MGM-51 Shillelagh guided missile. The M127 gave the gunner magnified aiming views and the correct reticle for either type of round. The checksight helped technicians verify alignment between the telescope and the missile tracker.
Historical Background
The M551 Sheridan entered U.S. Army service in 1967 and saw combat during the Vietnam War. Its lightweight design supported reconnaissance, airborne operations, and mobile fire support.
The vehicle combined a large 152mm gun/launcher with missile-guidance equipment, stabilization, and advanced optical instruments. This created a demanding maintenance environment and required detailed technical manuals for accurate repair and alignment.
TM 9-1240-311-34 was published in June 1972, the same period in which the improved M551A1 and its laser rangefinder entered service. Coverage of both the M127 and M127A1/M127E1 records this important stage in the development of Sheridan fire-control equipment.
