About the M34-Series Sight Units
The M34 family was a portable fire-control system used to aim several types of crew-served weapons. The basic sight assembly combined optical, mounting, leveling, and angle-setting components.
A typical system included the M79 Telescope Mount, M9 Telescope Adapter, and M62 Elbow Telescope. The M79 provided elevation settings, cross-level adjustment, and a longitudinal level. An M42 Instrument Light could illuminate the sight for nighttime use.
Different M34 versions were matched to specific weapons and mounting arrangements. The sight unit was separate from the mortar, recoilless rifle, or rocket launcher on which it was installed.

The M34-series sight units served with a wide range of U.S. weapons:
- M34 and M34A1: M30 4.2-inch Mortar and M27/M27A1 105mm Recoilless Rifle
- M34A2: M29 81mm Mortar, M84 4.2-inch Self-Propelled Mortar, M21 4.5-inch Multiple Rocket Launcher, and M20 75mm Recoilless Rifle
- M34A2C: XM34 318mm Rocket Launcher
These applications gave the M34 series a connection to infantry, artillery, chemical-mortar, armored-vehicle, and rocket units.
Historical Background
The M34 family was developed during the early Cold War as the Army expanded and improved its portable fire-control equipment. Its applications ranged from manually carried recoilless rifles to heavy mortars and vehicle-mounted weapon systems.
Several associated weapons had roots in World War II or the Korean War, while later M34 versions remained in use during the Vietnam era. The M34A2 was also used with the M84 self-propelled mortar, which placed the M30 4.2-inch mortar on a tracked armored chassis.
By 1972, the Army needed one current parts publication covering four related sight configurations. This manual records the shared components and differences needed to maintain the complete M34 family.
