About the M137 Telescope Mount
The M137 was developed under the earlier T186E3 designation. It was designed to hold and support the separate M115 Panoramic Telescope.
The mount provides elevation and cant, or cross-level, adjustments for indirect artillery fire. Its upper section supports the telescope and electrical equipment. The lower section contains the mounting bracket and adjustment controls.
A vehicle-powered lighting system allowed the fire-control equipment to be used during low-light and nighttime operations. The mount did not provide a sight picture by itself; that function came from the attached M115 telescope.

The M137 mount and M115 telescope were used with the M107 175-mm Self-Propelled Gun and M110 8-inch Self-Propelled Howitzer families.
Together, the mount and telescope helped the gun crew establish direction and make the corrections required for accurate indirect fire. Proper alignment was important because even a small error could affect accuracy at long range.
