Item Overview
This U.S. Army technical manual covers direct-support and general-support maintenance for the M115 Panoramic Telescope, formerly designated T146, Federal Stock Number 1240-895-9186. Issued as TM 9-1240-292-34 in June 1971, it was prepared for trained personnel responsible for servicing this precision artillery sight.
This listing is for the technical manual only. It does not include an M115 telescope, telescope mount, artillery weapon, tools, or other fire-control equipment.
About the M115/T146 Panoramic Telescope
The M115 was a fixed-focus panoramic telescope used to aim heavy artillery during indirect fire. It was installed with the M137 Telescope Mount, which supported the telescope and provided elevation and cross-level adjustments.
The M115 used an azimuth counter instead of exposed azimuth scales. This counter measured movement in quarter-mil units. The telescope provided 4-power magnification, a 10-degree field of view, and a full 6,400-mil azimuth range.
Its reticle could be viewed through a red illumination window or with a separate reticle lamp. The extended eyepiece helped the gunner use the telescope without interference from the counter assembly.
Historical Background
The first edition of TM 9-1240-292-34 was issued on October 29, 1962. Change 1 followed in January 1967. This June 1971 edition reflects the Army’s continued maintenance support for the M115 during the Vietnam era.
The M107 and M110 were part of a new generation of tracked heavy artillery introduced during the 1960s. The M107 provided long-range fire with its 175-mm gun, while the M110 carried an 8-inch howitzer for powerful high-angle fire.
Both systems served during the Vietnam War. The M115 helped their crews establish direction for indirect fire, while related elbow telescopes supported direct-fire aiming.
