Purpose and Publication History
Army change publications supplied revisions to existing manuals so military personnel could keep their references current. The 1964 base edition replaced TM 9-1940, dated May 17, 1956, and combined material from earlier changes and technical bulletins. Change 8 appeared more than eleven years later, extending the publication's revision history into the mid-1970s.
Base Manual Background
The parent manual addressed land-mine identification, markings, care, handling, preservation, packaging, and transportation. Its subjects included antipersonnel mines, antitank mines, practice equipment, chemical mines, and related components. Illustrations and reference tables accompanied the descriptions, while tactical doctrine was covered separately in FM 20-32. These subjects describe the broader publication that Change 8 was issued to update.
Land-Mine Development
Military land mines developed into several types for different roles. Antitank mines addressed armored vehicles, while antipersonnel designs included blast, bounding, and directional fragmentation types. The 1964 edition documented models such as the M14, M16A1, M18 and M18A1 Claymore, M15, M19, and M21. Its coverage of metal and nonmetallic bodies, along with practice and inert training versions, shows the variety of equipment in the Army's inventory.
History of Use
Land mines saw widespread use during World War II and remained part of military defenses during the Korean War and Cold War. They were used to restrict movement and protect important positions. During the Vietnam War, the M18A1 Claymore became associated with perimeter defense, including use at allied fire-support bases. This December 1975 supplement dates from the period following that conflict and provides a later point of reference in the Army's documentation history.
