About the M115/T146 Panoramic Telescope
The M115 was a fixed-focus panoramic telescope used to aim heavy artillery during indirect fire. It was installed with the M137 Telescope Mount, which supported the telescope and provided elevation and cross-level adjustments.
The telescope used an azimuth counter instead of exposed azimuth scales. This counter recorded movement in quarter-mil units. The M115 provided 4-power magnification, a 10-degree field of view, and a full 6,400-mil azimuth range.
Its reticle could be viewed through a red illumination window or with a separate reticle lamp. The extended eyepiece helped the gunner use the telescope without interference from the counter assembly.
Historical Background
The original manual was published as the M107 and M110 heavy self-propelled artillery systems were entering U.S. service. These tracked weapons gave artillery units greater mobility than older towed designs.
The M107 provided long-range fire with its 175-mm gun. The M110 carried an 8-inch howitzer for powerful high-angle fire. The M115 helped their crews establish direction during indirect-fire missions.
Change 2 was issued in January 1967, during a period of heavy American artillery use in Southeast Asia. It reflects the Army’s effort to keep repair-parts and supply information current for equipment serving under demanding field conditions.
