About the Elbow Telescopes
These elbow telescopes were compact, fixed-focus optical sights used to aim artillery during direct fire. Their angled eyepieces allowed the gunner to view the target from a practical position beside the weapon.
The models provided approximately 3-power magnification and a field of view of about 13 degrees. Their reticles were matched to specific weapons and ammunition. Instrument lighting supported use during low-light and nighttime operations.

Historical Background
The original 1962 manual covered optics from two periods of American artillery development. The M16A1-series telescopes supported traditional towed weapons with roots in World War II and the Korean War.
The M116 and M116C telescopes were associated with the newer M110 and M107 tracked artillery systems. These heavy self-propelled weapons entered service during the 1960s and were used during the Vietnam War.
Change 2 was issued in August 1967, when accurate parts and supply information was important for supporting artillery equipment in active service. The publication represents the Army’s continuing effort to maintain both older and newer fire-control systems.
