About the M134 Telescope Mount
The M134 was an adjustable fire-control mount used to support and level the M113 Panoramic Telescope. It attached to the weapon’s trunnion and provided a stable base for accurate artillery sighting.
The mount included an elevation-adjustment mechanism but did not provide the telescope’s azimuth adjustment. Azimuth readings and directional aiming were handled through the panoramic telescope.
The M134 should not be confused with a telescope. It was the mechanical support that held and positioned the separate optical instrument.
M102 Howitzer Application
The M134 mount and M113 panoramic telescope were part of the fire-control equipment used with the M102 105mm Light Towed Howitzer. The panoramic telescope helped the gunner lay the howitzer for direction during indirect-fire missions.
The M102 was designed as a lightweight and mobile replacement for older 105mm field howitzers. It could be towed, transported by aircraft, or carried by helicopter. Its circular firing platform also allowed the weapon to traverse through a full circle.
Later M134A1 mounts and M113A1 telescopes continued this basic fire-control arrangement. This Change 1 publication, however, specifically covers the earlier M134 mount identified by FSN 1240-065-5318.
Historical Background
The original manual appeared in August 1965 as M102 howitzers were entering wider U.S. Army service. More than 12,000 M102 howitzers were produced from 1963 through 1970, and the weapon saw extensive use during the Vietnam War.
Change 1 was issued in June 1969, during the M102’s main production and combat-service period. It reflects the Army’s effort to keep maintenance instructions current as technicians gained more experience with the mount in service.
