About the M115/T146 Panoramic Telescope
The M115 was a fixed-focus panoramic telescope used to aim heavy artillery during indirect fire. It was installed with the M137 Telescope Mount and allowed the gunner to establish and measure the weapon’s direction.
The telescope used an azimuth counter instead of exposed azimuth scales. This counter recorded movement in quarter-mil units. The optical system provided 4-power magnification, a 10-degree field of view, and a full 6,400-mil azimuth range.
Its reticle could be viewed through a red illumination window or with a separate reticle lamp. The extended eyepiece allowed the gunner to use the telescope without interference from the counter assembly.
Historical Background
The M115 was developed during the early Cold War for a new generation of heavy, tracked artillery. The M107 and M110 gave Army units greater mobility than older towed weapons while carrying powerful long-range guns.
Both systems entered service during the 1960s and were used during the Vietnam War. The M115 supported indirect fire, while related elbow telescopes helped crews aim during direct-fire missions.
Change 1 was issued in January 1967, during a period of heavy American artillery use in Southeast Asia. It reflects the Army’s continuing effort to keep maintenance instructions current for equipment serving under demanding field conditions.
