Purpose and Use

The 25×59mm cartridge was developed for the Objective Crew Served Weapon program, which later produced the XM307 Advanced Crew Served Weapon. The XM307 was designed as a lightweight, belt-fed system capable of firing programmable 25mm airburst ammunition against exposed or protected targets. It could also be converted to the .50-caliber XM312 configuration by changing several major components. Although the XM307 was not adopted for full service, the 25×59mm cartridge family was evaluated in later systems, including the Barrett XM109 anti-materiel payload rifle and the LW25 automatic weapon program.
