M518 Fiber Container for 2.75-Inch Mk 40 Rocket Motor with Mod 1 Grain Marking
This original M518 fiber ammunition container was made to protect a 2.75-inch Mk 40-series rocket motor during storage, handling, and shipment. The pictured stencil identifies a Mk 40 Mod 3 rocket motor fitted with a Mk 40 Mod 1 propellant grain. This listing is for the empty container only. No rocket motor, propellant, igniter, fin assembly, warhead, fuze, or other energetic component is included.
Construction and Identification
The M518 is a cylindrical military shipping tube made from fiberboard and tin, with an enamel and asphalt-impregnated protective finish. Military records identify it as NSN 8140-00-859-8011 and drawing number 8883478. Its removable end closures helped shield packaged rocket components from moisture, dirt, and handling damage. Original stencils, contract information, dates, lot numbers, and inspection marks may remain visible.
History of the Mk 40 Rocket System
The Mk 40 belonged to the 2.75-inch Folding-Fin Aircraft Rocket family, often called the “Mighty Mouse.” The rocket family was developed during the early Cold War and saw early service during the Korean War. It later became a widely used air-to-ground weapon. A complete rocket combined a motor with a selected warhead and fuze. Different combinations supported high-explosive, antitank, smoke, illumination, antipersonnel, and training missions.
Military Use
Mk 40-series motors were carried by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, including systems used on the UH-1 during the Vietnam War. The folding fins opened after launch to stabilize the rocket in flight. Fiber containers such as the M518 supported this weapons system by protecting components as they moved from storage depots to aviation units. Military guidance called for rocket components to remain in their original packaging until shortly before assembly and use. The Mk 40 generation was later followed by Mk 66 motors used with the Hydra 70 system.
Collectible Condition
This surplus container offers an authentic example of the packaging and logistics equipment behind an important American aircraft rocket system. Age-related scuffs, faded markings, stains, edge wear, dents, or surface damage may be present. It is suitable for military displays, aviation collections, museums, or restoration projects.
