Now available is a New Old Stock (NOS) M17/T46E1 Range Finder Cushioning Pad, part number 8620817, listed under NSN: 1240-00-062-4633. Originally manufactured for use in the M17/T46E1 stereoscopic range finder system, this cushioning pad was an integral component of the U.S. Army's M48 Patton main battle tank fire control system during the Cold War.
The M48 Patton series was the backbone of U.S. armored forces during the 1950s and 1960s, and its effectiveness was due in part to significant advancements in rangefinding and fire control technologies. Central to that was the T46E1 Range Finder, later known as the M17 series range finders, a stereoscopic optical instrument designed to allow the tank gunner to accurately gauge target distance under combat conditions.
The Range Finder Cushioning Pad served a critical protective function, absorbing shock and vibration during tank movement and gunnery operations. The pad protected the optical elements from misalignment, helping maintain targeting precision over rough terrain and during repeated firings.
