Function and Application
The F-94C used an afterburning Pratt & Whitney J48-P-5 or J48-P-5A turbojet. An afterburner added fuel behind the engine’s turbine and burned it in the exhaust section to produce extra thrust for takeoff, climbing, and interception.
The J48 system included dedicated afterburner-ignition equipment, including an igniter fuel valve and related pressure and drain hoses. The purpose of this equipment was to begin combustion of the afterburner fuel when additional thrust was selected.

Historical Background
The Lockheed F-94 Starfire was developed from the P-80 Shooting Star family as an all-weather jet interceptor. Its radar and two-person crew allowed it to locate and engage aircraft at night or in poor weather.
The F-94C was a major redesign that first flew in 1950. It received a more powerful afterburning engine, a redesigned wing and tail, improved navigation and fire-control equipment, and an all-rocket armament system.
The aircraft carried 2.75-inch folding-fin aerial rockets in the nose and, on some aircraft, additional rockets in wing-mounted pods. Unlike earlier Starfire versions, the F-94C did not carry guns.
F-94Cs protected the continental United States during the early Cold War. Their speed, radar equipment, and afterburning engines helped them respond quickly to possible aerial threats. The last F-94Cs were withdrawn from U.S. Air Force service in 1959.
