Description

Canadian-Stock A227912 Exhaust-System Ferrule for M3 Lee/Grant and M4 Sherman Tanks

Item Overview

This original exhaust-system ferrule is identified by drawing number A227912 and the catalog marking G104-04-00533. It was preserved in Canadian military stock and belongs to the World War II G-104 medium-tank parts family.

The G-104 catalog covered the M3 Lee/Grant and M4 Sherman families. Standard Parts Group 04 identified exhaust-system components.

A ferrule is a short sleeve used at a pipe connection. It may help align the adjoining pipes, reinforce the joint, and support a tighter seal under heat and vibration.

Historical Background

The United States introduced the Medium Tank M3 in 1941. It carried a 75mm gun in the hull and a smaller gun in the turret. British forces called different versions the Lee and Grant, and the tank saw major service in North Africa and other World War II theaters.

The M4 Sherman followed the M3 and became the main American medium tank of the war. The two tank families shared many design ideas, service parts, and supply records. The Army placed them within the broad G-104 catalog family.

M4 tanks were produced with several engines, including radial gasoline engines, diesel engines, Ford V-8 engines, and Chrysler multibank engines. These power plants required different exhaust layouts. This is why the ferrule should not be assigned to one M3 or M4 model without the original A227912 drawing or a complete parts listing.

Canada operated Sherman-family tanks and maintained large stocks of American-pattern replacement parts. This surviving ferrule reflects the international supply system that kept Allied armored vehicles in service.

Small exhaust parts were important to tank reliability. Exhaust connections had to withstand engine vibration, high temperatures, dirt, and repeated maintenance. A damaged or leaking joint could direct hot gases into the engine compartment or reduce the exhaust system’s strength.
