Historical Notes
Adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps in the mid-1980s, the SMAW—derived from the Israeli B-300—gave assault teams a compact, shoulder-launched system purpose-built for armor defeat and bunker reduction. The Mark 6 HEAA rocket (Mk124 warhead family) employs a shaped-charge design optimized to defeat light to medium armored vehicles and hardened field positions. SMAW rockets saw operational use from Desert Storm through Iraq and Afghanistan, where their combination of portability, accuracy, and immediate wall-breach/armor-kill capability made them a staple in urban and complex terrain operations.
