The original stencil is marked "COVER – 8410588 – 75 MM PACK HOW CRG M8," clearly identifying its intended application. This cover was designed to protect the mounted howitzer from dust, dirt, moisture, and other environmental conditions during storage and transportation.
Historical Significance
The 75mm Pack Howitzer M1A1 became one of the most successful lightweight artillery pieces used by the U.S. Army during World War II. Its compact design allowed it to be broken down into pack loads for transport by mule, aircraft, or glider, making it especially valuable to airborne, mountain, and Marine units.
Mounted on the M8 carriage, the howitzer could also be towed behind military vehicles while remaining light enough for rapid deployment in difficult terrain.
Although the M1A1 howitzer was a World War II weapon, this particular cover is a postwar U.S. military service accessory. It was cataloged under the Federal Stock Number system during the early 1960s as the Army continued supporting the Pack Howitzer, later redesignated the M116.
