Description

Inert 60mm M49A2 High Explosive Mortar Round with Dummy Fuze

This inert 60mm M49A2 High Explosive Mortar Round represents an early U.S. World War II mortar cartridge. It has the compact, fin-stabilized shape used by portable infantry mortars and is fitted with a non-functioning dummy fuze. This item is intended for historical display only.

Original Service Configuration

Period War Department records identify the original live model as the Shell, H.E. M49A2, with M52 point-detonating fuze. The M52 had superquick action, and complete service rounds were issued with the fuze installed. Live M49A2 ammunition was designed to produce blast and fragmentation against personnel and light equipment. This example is inert and does not contain a functioning service fuze, explosive fill, propellant, or ignition element.

Weapons System History

The M2 60mm mortar was a portable, muzzle-loaded, smoothbore weapon widely used by American forces during World War II. Its high-angle fire allowed infantry mortar crews to reach targets behind walls, ridges, vegetation, and other cover. The system was light enough to move with foot troops and gave infantry companies quick indirect-fire support without waiting for heavier artillery.

History of Use

The M49A2 was documented as U.S. 60mm high-explosive mortar ammunition by early 1943. The M2 mortar saw combat in the Pacific, Europe, and other World War II theaters, including the fighting around Buna in 1942. Later wartime manuals listed the improved M49A2, showing the continued development of the M49 ammunition family. M49-series rounds were also supplied to Allied nations through the Lend-Lease program.
