Description

5-Inch / 127mm Zuni Mark 32 Mod 0 ATAP Warhead Cutaway with Replica Mark 188 Mod 0 Fuze and Adapter/Booster

Item Overview

This display cutaway is built around an original U.S. Navy 5-inch Mark 32 Mod 0 Anti-Tank/Anti-Personnel warhead made for the Zuni aircraft rocket system. The original warhead body has been sectioned to reveal its internal layout. A newly manufactured inert replica Mark 188 Mod 0 nose fuze and replica adapter/booster complete the display. The assembly contains no explosive filler, propellant, live fuze train, detonator, or other energetic material. The rocket motor and launcher are not included.

Identification and Features

The official service designation was 5.0-Inch Rocket Warhead Mark 32 Mod 0, commonly shortened to Mk 32 Mod 0 ATAP. ATAP stands for Anti-Tank/Anti-Personnel and describes the warhead’s combined shaped-charge and fragmentation role. This cutaway preserves the form of the original warhead while allowing its major design areas to be viewed for study and display.

Cutaway Display

The cutaway section exposes the internal arrangement of the warhead body and helps explain how the original service design combined armor penetration with controlled fragmentation. The original warhead is the historical core of this display. The replica fuze and adapter/booster restore the correct general profile without adding a functioning explosive train. Minor details may differ from an assembled live-service example because these upper components were manufactured as inert reproductions.

Original Service Function

The live Mk 32 Mod 0 used a shaped-charge design with a copper cone to form a focused penetrating jet when the warhead struck a target. A patterned or waffled liner helped break the surrounding metal into useful fragments for an anti-personnel effect. This allowed the warhead to be used against armored vehicles, fortifications, equipment, gun positions, and exposed personnel. When fitted with the Mark 188 Mod 0 point-detonating fuze, the warhead was intended to function upon impact. All explosive and initiating materials found in an original service-loaded warhead are absent from this display.

Mark 188 Mod 0 Fuze and Booster

The original Mark 188 Mod 0 was an acceleration-armed, point-detonating nose fuze with no intentional delay. In service, the fuze initiated the explosive train after impact while built-in safety features helped prevent arming before launch. The fuze and adapter/booster included with this cutaway are newly manufactured inert replicas. They contain no detonator, booster charge, explosive train, or working firing mechanism and are included only to show the assembled appearance of the service warhead.

Zuni Rocket System

The Zuni was a modular 5-inch folding-fin aircraft rocket developed for the U.S. Navy during the Cold War. Different warheads and fuzes could be joined to a standard rocket motor to meet different missions. The Mark 41 Mod 1 ATAP configuration combined a Mark 16 rocket motor, Mark 32 Mod 0 warhead, and Mark 188 Mod 0 nose fuze. Zuni rockets could be launched individually or in rapid groups from four-round launcher packages. This listing includes only the cutaway warhead assembly and does not include a rocket motor, fins, igniter, launcher, or aircraft mounting equipment.

Historical Background and Use

The Zuni entered American naval aviation service during the late 1950s and became one of the best-known heavy unguided aircraft rockets of the Vietnam War. U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircraft used members of the Zuni family for training and combat missions against vehicles, fortified positions, buildings, artillery sites, and other surface targets. Documented Zuni launch platforms included the F-4 Phantom II, F-8 Crusader, A-4 Skyhawk, and OV-10 Bronco. The exact warhead and fuze fitted to a Zuni depended on the mission, so not every photographed Zuni carried the Mk 32 Mod 0 ATAP configuration represented by this display.

Condition

This item combines an original military warhead body with newly manufactured replica fuze and adapter/booster components.
