Put a true Cold War heavy hitter on display with this restored 5" / 127mm Mark 32 Mod 0 Anti-Tank Anti Personnel with Mark 71 Mod 1 Rocket Motor. This is a full-length, inert representation of the classic 5-inch Zuni ATAP rocket, finished with a CNC-machined aluminum replica fuze that completes the correct nose profile for museum-grade presentation.
The 5" Zuni – Heavyweight Folding-Fin / WAFAR Rocket
5" / 127mm Mark 32 Mod 0 Anti-Tank Anti Personnel with Mark 71 Mod 1 Rocket Motor, Developed in the 1950s as a modular system: one motor, multiple warheads, and a range of fuzes for different missions. It was carried mainly in four-round pods and cleared for both air-to-air and air-to-ground use, but in practice became a workhorse strike and close air support rocket in U.S. Navy and Marine Corps service, especially during the Vietnam War.
Later-production Zunis used the Mk 71 rocket motor, which introduced a smokeless propellant and a new wrap-around fin nozzle assembly. This wrap-around fin arrangement led to the Mk 71 family often being referred to as WAFAR (Wrap-Around Fin Aerial Rocket) rather than the earlier FFAR (Folding-Fin Aircraft Rocket) terminology.
Zuni ATAP rockets like this Mk 32 / Mk 71 combination were used against light armor, vehicles, bunkers, gun positions, and troop concentrations, making them one of the most versatile heavy rockets in the U.S.
Mark 32 Mod 0 ATAP Warhead – HEAT / Fragmentation
The 5.0-inch Rocket Warhead Mark 32 Mod 0 is the dedicated Anti-Tank Anti-Personnel (ATAP) head for the Zuni system. It is a HEAT-FRAG design, combining a shaped charge with a controlled-fragmentation steel shell so a single warhead can defeat both armored and soft targets.
Typical live-service characteristics:
- Type: ATAP (Anti-Tank Anti-Personnel), HEAT-FRAG
- Warhead weight: about 45.7 lb
- Explosive filler: approx. 15 lb Composition B
- Fragmentation effect:
-
- Produces over 2,000 quarter-inch steel fragments
- Capable of damaging light vehicles and personnel out to roughly 70 ft (about 21 m)
- Armor penetration (with point-detonating fuze):
-
- Up to 18 in (457 mm) of armor at 0°
- Around 7 in (178 mm) at 65° obliquity
Paired with appropriate impact or proximity fuzes, the Mk 32 Mod 0 was equally at home punching through armor or shredding area targets with fragmentation, which is why it appears in documentation under the ATAP designation.
Mark 71 Mod 1 WAFAR Rocket Motor
The Mk 71 Mod 1 is the high-performance Zuni rocket motor that replaced the earlier Mk 16 series. It uses a smokeless solid propellant and a redesigned nozzle/fin section with wrap-around fins, improving accuracy and handling while reducing launch signature.
Typical data for the Mk 71 Mod 1 motor (live configuration):
- Motor-only mass: about 79.5 lb (36 kg)
- Diameter: 5 in (127 mm)
- Length: roughly 77–82 in, depending on specific Mod and configuration
- Thrust: approx. 8,100 lbf for about 1.8 seconds
When fitted with the Mk 32 ATAP warhead, the result is a fast, heavy, and extremely destructive rocket well-suited for close air support, anti-armor strikes, and hard-target attack.
About This Specific Restored Round
- Original 5" Mark 32 Mod 0 ATAP Warhead – Professionally Restored
-
- Constructed from a genuine Mk 32 Mod 0 ATAP warhead body, correctly painted and refinished.
- Restored to show the proper HEAT-FRAG ATAP configuration, including correct external body form and banding.
- Mated to a Mark 71 Mod 1 WAFAR Rocket Motor (Inert)
-
- Warhead is assembled to an authentic Mk 71 Mod 1 rocket motor body, giving the full-length Zuni silhouette.
- Motor is completely inert: no propellant, no igniter, no energetic components remain.
- CNC-Machined Aluminum Replica Fuze
-
- A precision CNC-machined aluminum fuze replicates the shape and proportions of the operational nose fuze used on ATAP Zunis.
- Entirely inert, but visually completes the rocket, which is critical for aircraft pylon, LAU-10 pod, or ground rack displays.
- Fully Inert & Safe for Display
-
- No explosive filler in the warhead
- No live fuze parts
- No propellant or initiators in the motor
- Sold strictly as an inert, non-functional display item
This rocket is for static display only. It cannot be fired and must not be modified in any attempt to restore live function.
Ideal For
- Vietnam-era and Cold War aircraft displays (A-4, A-7, F-4, F-8, OV-10, and similar platforms)
- Museum exhibits on naval aviation, close air support, and rocket / HEAT technology.
- Advanced ordnance collections focused on anti-tank rockets, ATAP warheads, and U.S. 5" rocket evolution.
- Shop, hangar, or office displays where a large, visually impressive rocket becomes an instant focal point
