The older stock number format on the box was used before the modern 13-digit NSN format became standard.
Condition
This assembly is New/Old Stock military surplus with its original 1967 box. The metal part retains its dark military finish. Minor storage marks, light finish wear, and small areas of surface oxidation may be present.
Colored thread-locking or protective compound is visible inside the mounting holes. The original cardboard packaging shows normal age and storage wear. Please review the pictures for representative condition.
Historical Background
The U.S. Army introduced the M5 armament subsystem during the 1960s for armed UH-1B and UH-1C “Huey” helicopters. It mounted an M75 40mm grenade launcher in a flexible turret beneath the helicopter’s nose.
The M5 was electrically powered and remotely controlled. A hand-operated sight allowed the copilot to aim and fire the launcher. Linked 40mm ammunition traveled from a rotary ammunition can through flexible chutes to the weapon. The complete system had a listed capacity of 325 rounds.
The M75 was an air-cooled, externally powered, belt-fed automatic grenade launcher. It gave Army helicopters strong area-fire capability against ground targets. M5-equipped Hueys became an important part of American helicopter gunship operations during the Vietnam War.
The original March 1967 package places this spare part directly within the Vietnam War production period. It is a desirable artifact for collectors of early helicopter armament, Huey gunship equipment, and historic 40mm weapon systems.
