Historical Background
The Bofors 40mm L/60 was developed by the Swedish company Bofors during the early 1930s. It became one of the most important medium anti-aircraft guns used during World War II.
Allied forces used the Bofors gun on land and at sea. Naval versions were installed on aircraft carriers, destroyers, escort ships, and many other vessels. Twin and quadruple mounts helped protect ships from low-flying aircraft.
The gun was also used in ground-based anti-aircraft batteries. Its strong design, rapid fire, and reliable action helped make it one of the best-known automatic cannons of the war.
The L/60 fired complete 40x311mmR cartridges. Live ammunition was produced in several forms for different targets and missions.
High-Explosive Self-Destroying Tracer Ammunition
The original live version of this round combined three main features.
The high-explosive projectile was made to damage an aircraft or other target after impact. The tracer allowed the gun crew to follow the path of the projectile during flight.
The self-destroying feature was designed to activate if the projectile did not strike a target. This helped reduce the danger of a complete live projectile falling back to the ground or sea.
This example has been rendered completely inert. Its explosive, tracer, and self-destroying functions are no longer active.
Greyhound Film Provenance
Greyhound is a World War II naval drama set during the Battle of the Atlantic. The story follows an Allied convoy and its escort ships as they cross dangerous waters while under attack from German submarines.
The film stars Tom Hanks as the commander of the convoy escort. Original military items were used as production props to help create a more accurate wartime setting.
This 40mm Bofors round was part of that production. Its included Certificate of Authenticity documents its connection to the film and makes it more desirable than a standard inert Bofors cartridge.
