Description

M1916 37mm Gun Filling Plug Assembly, Drawing A187015

Item Overview

The M1916 37mm Filling Plug Assembly is a U.S. Army component used in the gun’s recoil mechanism. It closed the oil-filling opening at the front of the recoil cylinder.

The plug could be removed when the recoil cylinder needed to be filled or serviced. Its retaining hardware kept it attached to the gun during maintenance.

This is a recoil-mechanism filling plug. It is not an ammunition filling plug, projectile component, or fuze part.

Historical Background

The 37mm Gun M1916 was a compact infantry-support weapon adopted from a French design during World War I. American troops used these guns against machine-gun positions, personnel, and other light targets.

The M1916 remained in U.S. Army service after the war. By 1945, it was mainly used as a subcaliber training gun mounted on larger artillery systems. This allowed crews to practice aiming and firing with smaller, less expensive ammunition.

The filling plug assembly supported the gun throughout this long service life by providing access to the recoil cylinder during maintenance.
