Historical Significance:

The 3-pounder guns and their ammunition played a crucial role in naval and coastal defense during the late 1800s and early 1900s. These guns were purchased from abroad during the late 1800s and were widely used by various naval forces. The Hotchkiss weapons, renowned for their rapid firing capability, were crank-operated, five-barrel revolver-style rotating guns, somewhat similar to the Gatling gun but featuring a different ammunition feed system. Other variants were conventional single-barrel types.

  • Mark 1: The original Hotchkiss-built 3-pdr rapid-firing gun.
  • Mark 1 Mod 1: A longer version built in France.
  • Mark 2: The Driggs-Schroeder Mark 1.
  • Mark 3: Similar to Mark 2 but without trunnions.
  • Mark 4: The Hotchkiss semi-automatic Gun Mark 4.
  • Mark 5: The Maxim-Nordenfeldt semi-automatic Gun Mark I with a rotating and sliding breech block.
  • Mark 6: The Maxim-Nordenfeldt semi-automatic Mark 2.
  • Mark 7: The Vickers and Sons and Maxim semi-automatic Gun Mark 3.
  • Mark 8: A Hotchkiss-Armstrong gun similar to the Mark 1.
  • Mark 9: The Nordenfeldt Gun Mark 1, with a rotating and sliding breech block.
  • Marks 10 and 11: Hotchkiss guns are very similar to the Mark 4.
  • Mark 12: The Maxim rapid-fire gun Mark M with a rotating and sliding breech-block, with only two purchased and later withdrawn from service.

Although these guns were considered too small to be effective against torpedo-carrying craft and were mostly withdrawn from active service before World War I, they were brought back into service during the war to arm small patrol boats. Some even continued their service into World War II, demonstrating their versatility and enduring utility in naval warfare.
