This 25mm pusher is an internal component from a 25×137mm discarding-sabot projectile assembly. How It Worked
The pusher was positioned behind the subcaliber penetrator or practice core inside the sabot assembly. When the cartridge fired, it helped transfer the force of the expanding gases to the projectile while supporting the core during acceleration through the barrel. The lightweight aluminum construction added little unnecessary mass. After the projectile left the muzzle, the pusher and sabot separated from the subcaliber projectile.
APDS and TPDS Applications
The M791 APDS-T service projectile used an aluminum pusher with a tungsten-alloy penetrator and plastic sabot. The related M910 TPDS-T training projectile used an aluminum-alloy pusher plug with a steel practice core and nylon sabot. These assemblies used the same basic operating principle, but individual pushers should not be considered interchangeable between models without confirming their dimensions or markings.
Historical Background
The 25×137mm cartridge family grew from automatic-cannon development that began during the 1960s. It later became associated with weapons including the M242 Bushmaster and Oerlikon KBA. The M791 provided armor-piercing capability against lightly armored targets, while the M910 allowed crews to practice high-velocity sabot engagements using a less costly training projectile. Small components such as this pusher helped each projectile remain aligned and withstand the extreme force of firing.
