Historical Background
The 25x59B cartridge was developed during the 1990s for the U.S. military’s Objective Crew Served Weapon, or OCSW, program. That weapon later became known as the XM307 Advanced Crew Served Weapon.
The XM307 was designed as a lightweight automatic weapon capable of firing several types of 25mm ammunition. Development included target-practice, armor-piercing, high-explosive, and air-burst cartridges. Test casings like this one supported the development of the cartridge, weapon, feeding system, and ammunition components.
Barrett later adapted the same 25x59mm ammunition family for the XM109. The XM109 began as the Objective Sniper Weapon and was later called the Anti-Materiel Payload Rifle.
The XM109 used the basic lower receiver and operating system of the .50-caliber M82/M107, combined with a new 25mm upper receiver, barrel, bolt, and five-round magazine. It was a short-recoil-operated, semi-automatic prototype intended to engage light armor, equipment, and other materiel targets at extended distances.
Army testing continued during the early 2000s, but the XM109 was never adopted as a standard service weapon. Its limited development history makes surviving 25x59B test components especially interesting examples of experimental American small-arms and ammunition technology.
