Item Overview
This original military-surplus lever was used to lock the top cover plate on the M139 20mm gun-cradle assembly. The cradle formed part of the XM27/M27 powered cupola fitted to the M114A1E1 armored vehicle, later designated the M114A2. This mechanical component contains no explosive material, propellant, or ammunition.

The March 1973 U.S. Army repair-parts manual lists this component under the simple name “LEVER.” Figure 47 shows the part with the gun-cradle cover plates, brackets, latches, shafts, and related hardware.

How the Locking Lever Worked
The lever operated with related shaft, pin, bracket, and latch parts in the gun-cradle assembly. Moving it to the locked position secured the top cover plate during vehicle movement and gun operation. Releasing the lever allowed the cover to be opened for loading, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance. It was cradle hardware and did not control firing or serve as part of the ammunition.

This lever was cataloged for the XM27 powered cupola used on the M114A1E1, which was later designated the M114A2. The cupola carried the M139 20mm autocannon and allowed the crew to aim and operate the weapon from a protected position. The M139 fired the 20×139mm cartridge and provided more firepower than the .50-caliber weapon fitted to earlier M114 vehicles. Compatibility with other M139 installations or similarly named systems should not be assumed without matching the part number.
Historical Background
The M114 was developed as a small tracked command-and-reconnaissance vehicle and entered U.S. service during the early 1960s. It saw service during the Vietnam War era. The M114A1E1 upgrade added the XM27 powered cupola and M139 cannon and was later standardized as the M114A2. The M139 was the American service version of the Hispano-Suiza HS.820 20mm autocannon.
