This New Old Stock 20mm Feeder Winder (Right Hand) with Rod Assembly is a rare and authentic U.S. military surplus part specifically designed for the M24 series autocannons. These feeder winders were used in twin-gun turret installations such as those found in the A-5 fire control system on the B-47 Stratojet strategic bomber. This right-hand unit features an integrated rod assembly and was used to remotely (electrically) wind the feeder mechanism, preparing the M24 to chamber a 20mm round for firing.

During the early Cold War era, the B-47 Stratojet represented a leap forward in U.S. strategic airpower. To defend this high-speed jet bomber against interceptor threats, it was equipped with remotely operated turrets controlled by onboard radar and fire control systems. The M24 20mm cannon, which utilized electrically-driven feeding systems like this one, provided reliable defensive firepower for the tail gunner or radar-guided fire control system operator.

Historical Significance:

The feeder winder mechanism was a critical component in the operational reliability of remotely fired 20mm cannons in high-speed aircraft like the B-47. This particular unit, paired with the M24 series guns, contributed to the U.S. Air Force’s early Cold War doctrine of strategic deterrence through airborne nuclear capability. Few of these systems remain in existence, making this component highly collectible for aviation historians, restorers, and military ordnance enthusiasts.

  • Cold War aircraft turret restoration projects
  • Aviation museums and technical collections
  • M24 armament system restorers
  • U.S. Air Force historical displays
  • Collectors of jet-era aircraft components
