Give your early 2.75" / 70mm rocket pod, pylon, or shelf display real historical character with this restored 2.75" / 70mm Mark 5 High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead. This is an inert original U.S. 2.75" FFAR Mk 5 HEAT warhead body that has been professionally restored for display, while retaining its original shaped-charge (EFP-style) liner inside—visible in the photos—so you can see exactly how a true HEAT warhead was constructed, without any of the explosive components.
The result is a highly authentic, visually correct early HEAT warhead that remains completely inert and safe for static display.
The Mark 5 HEAT Warhead
The Mk 5 HEAT warhead was one of the earliest shaped-charge designs fielded on the U.S. 2.75" Folding-Fin Aerial Rocket (FFAR), better known as the “Mighty Mouse.” Developed in the 1950s, it provided a compact air-launched anti-tank and anti-armor capability for U.S. fighters and, later, armed helicopters.
Key historical points:
- Used on early Mk-series FFAR combinations (for example, rockets designated with Mk 3 or Mk 5 HEAT configurations pairing HEAT heads with appropriate motors).
- Designed as a shaped-charge (HEAT) warhead, focusing explosive energy into a narrow jet to perforate armor, armored vehicles, bunkers, and hardened point targets.
- Represented the “10-pounder-class” HEAT head in the 2.75" rocket family, predating later dual-purpose and heavier HE/FRAG warheads like the M151 and M229 in the Hydra 70 series.
- Saw service on early jet aircraft and then extensively in the Vietnam era on helicopter gunships, where it provided a shaped-charge option alongside newer HE and flechette warheads.
Over time, the Mk 5 was considered less effective against modern heavy armor but remained very useful against light vehicles, fighting positions, bunkers, and infrastructure, making it an important early chapter in the evolution from Mighty Mouse rockets to modern Hydra 70 HEAT and HEDP warheads.
About This Restored Mark 5 HEAT Warhead
Authentic Mk 5 HEAT Warhead Body
- Restored from a genuine U.S. 2.75" / 70mm Mk 5 HEAT warhead body, not a reproduction.
- Retains the classic early FFAR HEAT geometry: slender ogive nose, cylindrical mid-section, and threaded base for mating to 2.75" rocket motors.
- Refinished to present as a service-correct warhead, suitable for rocket, pod, pylon, or stand-alone display.
Original Shaped-Charge (EFP) Liner Retained
- The warhead still contains its original copper-shaped charge liner (often referred to as an EFP liner), visible in the interior when viewed from the nose.
- This liner is a critical teaching feature: it shows how the HEAT cone / EFP liner sits inside the body and how the warhead was engineered to form a high-velocity jet on detonation.
Restored Exterior Finish
- Exterior surfaces have been repainted and marked to match period-appropriate standards, while preserving key original details, such as welds, seams, and manufacturing features.
- Ideal for pairing with inert 2.75" rocket motors and launcher tubes to build a full-length reference round or a visually complete rocket pod load.
-
NSN / NIIN / DODIC Reference (Live-Service Mk 5 Warheads)
For collectors and researchers, U.S. ammunition catalog data (CAPULDI) associates the Mk 5 warhead with the following identifiers:
- DODIC / DODAC H837 – Warhead, 2.75 inch, HE Mk 5
- NSN 1340-00-038-8176 – WARHEAD, 2.75 INCH, HE MK5
-
- NIIN 000388176CAPULDI 2009
Note that cataloging uses the generic “HE” designation even though the Mk 5 is operationally a HEAT (shaped-charge) warhead. These numbers apply to live-service warhead items and are provided purely for historical and documentation purposes.
Ideal For
- Completing early 2.75" FFAR / Mighty Mouse displays on jet interceptors or ground-attack aircraft.
- Vietnam-era helicopter gunship collections (UH-1, AH-1, and similar platforms) needing period-correct HEAT warheads.
- Museums and training programs that want an EFP warhead intact internally, while remaining safe and inert.
- Advanced ordnance collections focusing on the transition from early FFAR rockets to modern Hydra 70 systems.
