Add a true early-generation anti-armor aircraft rocket to your collection with this restored 2.75" / 70mm Mark 5 High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) rocket, correctly assembled on an original Mark 40 Mod 3 Folding-Fin Aerial Rocket (FFAR) motor. This full-length rocket captures the form, proportions, and hardware of an operational Mk 5 HEAT rocket while remaining completely inert and safe for static display.
The Mark 5 warhead retains its original internal shaped-charge / EFP (visible in the photos), giving you a rare opportunity to show the real internal geometry of a HEAT warhead without any explosive components.
The Mark 5 HEAT Warhead
The Mk 5 HEAT warhead was one of the earliest shaped-charge heads fielded on the U.S. 2.75" Folding-Fin Aerial Rocket (FFAR)—the famous “Mighty Mouse.” Developed in the 1950s, it provided fighters and, later, attack helicopters with a compact, air-launched anti-tank and anti-armor weapon.
Key reference characteristics for the live Mk 5 HEAT warhead:
- Type: High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) shaped-charge warhead
- Filler (live configuration): Approx. 404 g (14.2 oz) of Composition B main charge plus a tetryl booster behind a copper shaped-charge
- Effect: Forms a focused, high-velocity jet capable of perforating armor and hardened point targets
- Service use: Employed on fixed-wing aircraft and rotary-wing platforms from the early Cold War into the Vietnam era, typically loaded in 7- and 19-tube pods under wings and pylons
The Mk 5 HEAT round represents the “10-pounder-class” anti-tank warhead in the 2.75" family—a direct ancestor of later HEAT and dual-purpose warheads developed for the Hydra 70 system.
Your warhead preserves the original EFP (explosively formed penetrator) inside the body, while inert.
Mark 40 Mod 3 Folding-Fin Rocket Motor
The Mk 40 was the universal follow-on motor developed from the original Mk 4 2.75" FFAR. It introduced a more powerful motor and nozzle changes optimized for slow-speed platforms and armed helicopters, and could be fitted with a wide variety of warheads—HE, HEAT, flechette, smoke, illumination, and more.
The Mk 40 Mod 3 variant is a standard operational configuration, distinguished mainly by its internal igniter and bulkhead layout. In service, rockets with Mk 40 Mod 3 motors were widely used from aircraft and helicopter pods such as the LAU-3, LAU-32, M158, and M159.
Typical live Mk 40 rocket characteristics (with HE-type warheads) include:
- Caliber: 2.75 in / 70 mm
- Motor role: Solid-fuel folding-fin rocket motor, spin-stabilized
- Use: Air-to-surface and, historically, some air-to-air applications from a wide range of U.S. fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft
Paired with the Mk 5 HEAT warhead, the Mk 40 Mod 3 motor gives you a correct, full-length early FFAR anti-tank rocket suitable for Vietnam-era and Cold War aircraft and helicopter displays.
About This Restored Mk 5 HEAT Rocket (Warhead + Mk 40 Mod 3 Motor)
Authentic Mk 5 HEAT Warhead with Original Liner
- Built from a genuine U.S. 2.75" / 70mm Mk 5 HEAT warhead body, not a reproduction.
- Retains the original shaped-charge EFP inside the warhead, providing a true representation of how the live warhead was constructed.
Original Mk 40 Mod 3 Rocket Motor (Inert)
- Genuine Mk 40 Mod 3 FFAR rocket motor casing, restored for display.
- Correct folding-fin tail section and overall length give the rocket its classic full-length FFAR profile when mated to the Mk 5 warhead.
- Motor is inert: no propellant grain, no igniter, no live components present.
Display-Ready Exterior Finish
- Warhead and motor are restored in a service-appropriate scheme, with period-style markings where applicable.
- Ready to mount under a wing, alongside a pod, on a wall display, or in a museum case as a complete Mk 5 HEAT / Mk 40 Mod 3 rocket.
