Capture the look of a true Vietnam-era 2.75" Folding-Fin Aerial Rocket (FFAR) with this restored Mark 40 Mod 3 rocket motor. This is a restored original U.S.-issue Mk 40 Mod 3 motor. This piece is fully inert and finished for safe, long-term display while preserving the correct profile, fin assembly, and overall appearance of an operational rocket motor.
The Mark 40 Mod 3 FFAR Rocket Motor
The 2.75" FFAR (“Mighty Mouse”) family was originally developed in the late 1940s and 1950s as a compact, high-rate-of-fire rocket for U.S. Navy and Air Force aircraft. The later Mk 40 “universal” motor was an improved development of the earlier Mk 4 motor, using a more powerful solid propellant grain and standardized hardware so it could accept a wide range of warheads and fuzes.
In service, Mk 40-powered FFARs were used extensively from the late 1950s through the Vietnam War on fixed-wing aircraft and armed helicopters, including UH-1 gunships and early AH-1 Cobras. Pods of 7 or 19 rockets gave pilots and crews a flexible air-to-ground weapon for anti-personnel, anti-armor, and target-marking missions.
Key historical points (live motor, for reference):
- Caliber: 2.75" / 70mm FFAR rocket motor
- Type: Low-spin, folding-fin aircraft rocket motor (LSFFAR) designed for air-launched use
- Fins: Folding fin assembly deployed at launch for in-flight stabilization
- Typical warheads: Mark 1 HE, M151 HE (10-pounder), M229 HE (17-pounder), Mk 5 HEAT, flechette, and smoke/illumination types with a variety of point-detonating and proximity fuzes
- Service era: Late 1950s through Vietnam and into the early modern period, before gradual replacement by the Hydra 70 system using the Mk 66 motor
About This Restored Mk 40 Mod 3 Motor
- Authentic U.S. Mk 40 Motor Tube (Inert)
-
- Genuine 2.75" / 70mm Mk 40 Mod 3 rocket motor that has been professionally restored

- Correct FFAR Visual Profile
-
- Retains the distinctive Mk 40 dimensions and contour, including the aft nozzle section and fin section
- Folding-fins carefully restored to match the period configuration, giving the motor the proper “ready for loading” look seen on Vietnam-era aircraft.
- Restored for Display
-
- Restored to represent a service-correct FFAR motor with appropriate color and stenciling style inspired by U.S. Army and Navy technical painting/marking standards.
- Ideal for pairing with restored 2.75" warheads and rocket pods to complete a realistic air-to-ground ordnance display.
- Completely Inert
-
- No energetic materials, no live rocket components, and no ignition capability.
- Intended strictly as a non-functional, inert display and educational piece.
NSN / NIIN / DODIC Reference (Live-Service Mk 40 Motors & Rounds)
For collectors, museums, and researchers, U.S. ammunition catalogs and CAPULDI-style listings identify the Mk 40 motor and Mk 40-powered rockets under dedicated DODIC entries. For example, DLA ammunition tables list:
- DODIC H116 – Rocket Motor, MK40 and Mods, unassembled or assembled
- Multiple complete 2.75" rockets combining Mk 40 motors with various warheads (M151, M229, Mk 5 HEAT, spotting, smoke, and practice types) appear under DODICs such as H469, H470, H471, H487, H488, H490, H518, H519, H826, and H828, each describing specific warhead/fuze/motor combinations.
Ideal For
- Completing 2.75" FFAR rockets with restored HE, HEAT, or practice warheads
- Vietnam-era helicopter and attack-aircraft pylon or pod displays
- Museum exhibits covering the transition from FFAR to Hydra 70 rocket systems
- Advanced ordnance collections focusing on Cold War and Vietnam-era air-to-ground weapons
