Restored 2.75" / 70mm Mark 1 High Explosive Rocket with Mark 4 Mod 10 Motor – Inert Display
Add a true early Cold War aircraft rocket to your collection with this inert restored 2.75" / 70mm Mark 1 High Explosive rocket, correctly assembled on an original Mark 4 Mod 10 Folding-Fin Aerial Rocket (FFAR) motor. This full-length display captures the classic profile of the early 2.75-inch FFAR family—better known as the “Mighty Mouse”—while remaining completely inert and safe for static display. The 2.75-inch FFAR family was developed in the late 1940s and 1950s as a compact, unguided rocket for U.S. military aircraft, first for air-to-air use and later for air-to-ground.

The Mark 1 High Explosive Warhead
The Mark 1 HE head was one of the early explosive warheads developed for the 2.75-inch FFAR system. Period Navy ordnance documentation notes that explosive-loaded Mk 1 heads could be issued with either Fuze Mk 176, which incorporated a delay element, or Fuze Mk 178, a point-detonating fuze. The same documentation places the Mk 1 alongside other early 2.75-inch heads such as the Mk 5 HEAT and the Mk 3 / Mk 4 armor-piercing heads, confirming the Mk 1’s role as one of the original service high-explosive options in the FFAR family.
Historically, these early 2.75-inch rockets were intended to give fighters and attack aircraft a light, fast-firing rocket battery that could be carried in large numbers. While the original “Mighty Mouse” concept centered on air-to-air bomber interception, the family ultimately found much greater success in the air-to-ground role, where high-explosive, HEAT, smoke, and other warheads were used against troops, vehicles, and field fortifications.

Mark 4 Mod 10 Folding-Fin Rocket Motor
The Mark 4 motor was the original propulsion system for the early 2.75-inch FFAR before universal motors like the Mk 40 became standard. The Mk 4 used a folding-fin tail section that deployed after launch to stabilize the rocket in flight, giving the FFAR family its name. By around 1960, the Mk 4 had become the standard motor family for 2.75-inch rocket heads before being later replaced by the Mk 66 series in broader service.

The Mark 4 Mod 10, therefore, represents an important early stage in the evolution of the 70mm rocket family: the classic motor associated with the original FFAR era, before the improved low-spin motors and later Hydra 70 wrap-around-fin motors took over. For collectors, it is the correct motor style for an early Mk 1 HE rocket display.
About This Restored Rocket

Authentic Mk 1 HE Warhead
  • Built from a genuine 2.75" / 70mm Mk 1 high explosive warhead.
  • Restored to preserve the correct early FFAR paint and markings associated with first-generation 2.75-inch explosive heads.
  • An excellent reference piece for collectors focused on the transition from early air-to-air FFARs to later air-to-ground rocket systems.
Original Mark 4 Mod 10 Motor
  • Fitted to an original Mark 4 Mod 10 FFAR rocket motor body.
  • Retains the classic early folding-fin tail section associated with the original Mighty Mouse-era rockets.
  • Correct for early 2.75-inch rocket displays where a later Mk 40 or Mk 66 motor would not be historically appropriate.
Inert
  • Warhead and motor have been rendered completely inert.
  • No explosive filler, fuze train, propellant, igniter, or live energetic components remain.
  • Restored for long-term display while preserving original military character.

Ideal For
  • Early 2.75-inch FFAR / Mighty Mouse aircraft rocket displays
  • Military training aids
  • Cold War aviation ordnance collections
  • Museum exhibits tracing the development of U.S. 70mm aircraft rockets.
  • Completing period-correct pylon, launcher, or rocket pod displays with an early HE configuration.
