Give your 70mm rocket pod, pylon, or shelf display real visual authority with this restored 2.75" / 70mm M229 High Explosive (17-Pounder) warhead, complete with a machined, anodized M440 dummy fuze. This assembly captures the look and proportions of a live M229 “17-pounder” Hydra warhead, while remaining completely inert and safe for static display.
The M440 dummy fuze is made in our machine shop from solid 6061 aluminum, then anodized and hand ink-marked, and is dimensionally modeled from an original fuze for maximum authenticity.

The M229 17-Pounder HE Warhead
The M229 is the heavier, elongated high-explosive warhead in the 2.75" / 70mm Hydra family, developed as an evolution of the classic M151 “10-pounder”. It is a high-explosive fragmentation, general-purpose warhead designed to provide a significantly larger lethal footprint than the earlier M151.

Technical characteristics for the live warhead (for reference):
  • Type: High Explosive
  • Description: Elongated HE-FRAG warhead commonly referred to as the “17-pounder.”
  • Length (with fuze): roughly 26 inches
  • Weight with fuze: about 17 pounds
  • Explosive filler: approximately 4.8 pounds of Composition B-4
  • Effect: roughly 50% increase in lethal area over the M151 10-pounder warhead
In U.S. service, M229 warheads are used against troops, soft-skinned vehicles, light structures, and area targets, and have been fielded on a wide range of rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft using 7- and 19-tube launchers in theFFAR and Hydra 70 system.
M440 Point-Detonating Fuze (SQ & Delay)
Hydra 70 HE warheads are designed to accept nose-mounted point-detonating fuzes, including types like the M423, M427, and M440. These fuzes provide superquick (SQ) action on impact and, in some configurations, a short delay to allow the warhead to penetrate light cover or structures before detonation.
The M440 is one of the fuzes documented in U.S. ammunition data for 2.75" rockets and is a historically correct PD fuze type for nose-fuzed high-explosive warheads in this family.
Your warhead is completed with a dummy M440 fuze that replicates the exterior form and markings of a live fuze while remaining completely inert.
About This Restored M229 Warhead & Dummy Fuze

  • Authentic M229 17-Pounder Warhead Body (Inert)
    • Built from a genuine M229 warhead body
    • Restored exterior with correct “17-pounder” HE profile, including the elongated body and ogive that distinguish it from the shorter M151.
    • Finished to represent a service-correct HE warhead (appropriate olive drab finish with HE-style markings, as applicable to the batch).
  • 6061 Aluminum M440 Dummy Fuze
    • CNC-machined in our shop from solid 6061 aluminum bar stock.
    • Anodized to provide a hard, corrosion-resistant surface and a professional appearance.
    • Hand-ink-marked to echo the look of original fuze markings, giving your display a “pulled from the crate” appearance.
    • Dimensionally modeled from an original M440 fuze, capturing the correct external shape, shoulder, thread profile, and nose form.
  • Completely Inert Assembly
    • Warhead is empty: no explosive filler, no burster, no live components.
    • Fuze is a solid, non-functional replica with no internal fuze mechanism.
    • Intended strictly as an inert display and educational piece, not for any functional use.
NSN / NIIN / DODIC Reference (Live-Service M229 Rockets)
For collectors and researchers, U.S. CAPULDI data identify live rockets with the M229 warhead under several DODICs and NSNs. For example:
  • DODIC H488 – Rocket, 2.75 inch HE with warhead M229
    • Includes NSNs such as 1340-00-143-7101, 1340-00-143-7106, and 1340-00-180-9909 for unassembled and assembled M229 rockets.
  • DODICs H640, H641, H642 – Rocket, 2.75 inch HE with warhead M229 and fuze
    • With NSNs 1340-01-309-5800, 1340-01-309-5801, and 1340-01-309-8300 for various packaging configurations.CAPULDI 2009
