Bring authentic close air support history into your collection with this restored 2.75" / 70mm M151-style Hydra rocket, built around a genuine inert Mk 66 Mod 2 rocket motor mated to an original 2.75" WTU-1/B practice warhead that has been professionally finished to visually replicate the iconic M151 High Explosive warhead (commonly known as the 10-pound HE warhead). The result is a full-size display piece.

A Classic of Modern Close Air Support

The 2.75" Folding-Fin Aerial Rocket family began in the late 1940s and evolved into what is now known as the Hydra 70 system, a 70mm unguided rocket widely used by U.S. and allied forces from the Vietnam era to the present day.

The M151 High Explosive warhead is the classic general-purpose "10-pounder," designed for anti-personnel and light material targets. It contains a steel body filled with approximately 2.3 lb of Composition B-4 high explosive and, on detonation, shatters into thousands of high-velocity fragments with a burst radius of about 10 m and an effective casualty radius exceeding 50m. This warhead, fired from aircraft such as the AH-1 Cobra, AH-64 Apache, UH-1 Huey, and other rotary- and fixed-wing platforms, became a staple of battlefield fire support.

The Mk 66 rocket motor—in this case the Mk 66 Mod 2—is the modern WAFAR (wrap-around fin) motor developed to replace earlier Mk 4/Mk 40 motors. It uses a more powerful, smokeless propellant and wrap-around fins that deploy after launch, providing improved performance while remaining compatible with a wide family of 70mm warheads, including the M151.

About the WTU-1/B Practice Warhead

Your display rocket uses a real 2.75" WTU-1/B practice warhead, originally designed as an inert slug for training and system testing. The WTU-1/B is manufactured to have the same external shape, weight, and center of gravity as the live M151 HE warhead. Still, it is solid, inert, and produced without a fuze cavity or explosive filler. This ensures authentic geometry and handling characteristics while remaining completely non-functional.

On this piece, the WTU-1/B has been professionally refinished to visually represent an M151 High Explosive warhead, giving you the correct silhouette and presence of a live HE round without any energetic components.
