Inert 155mm M483A1 High Explosive Projectile With M501A1 Mechanical Time and Superquick Fuze.

See more information below...

This inert 155mm M483A1 artillery projectile with M501A1 Mechanical Time & Superquick (MT-SQ) Fuze is a Cold War-era high-explosive ordnance item designed for use with U.S. Army howitzers such as the M109 and M198. Fully inert and safe for display, this historic round represents a significant advancement in artillery effectiveness during the late 20th century.

The M483A1 DPICM (Dual-Purpose Improved Conventional Munition) projectile was developed to increase lethality against both personnel and lightly armored targets. Instead of a traditional unitary high-explosive charge, the M483A1 carried 88 submunitions (grenade-like bomblets) dispersed over a target area via mechanical time fuze detonation mid-flight. These submunitions included shaped-charge and fragmentation effects, capable of penetrating light armor and producing deadly anti-personnel shrapnel patterns.

The M501A1 Mechanical Time & Superquick Fuze mounted on this projectile allowed gunners to choose between timed airburst or point-detonating impact modes. In "Time" mode, the projectile would airburst, releasing submunitions across a wide pattern for maximum area coverage. In "Superquick" mode, the round would function like a standard high-explosive shell, detonating upon impact for localized blast and fragmentation effects.

The M483A1 entered U.S. Army service in the 1970s and remained a standard for indirect fire missions requiring anti-personnel and anti-armor effects. It played a significant role in tactical doctrine throughout the Cold War and Gulf War eras, and was fielded by numerous NATO allies. It represents a shift in artillery strategy toward area denial and saturation fire, and remains a notable artifact of modern battlefield evolution.

This is an authentic, demilitarized artifact perfect for collectors of inert ordnance, Cold War militaria, and modern artillery history.
