The M114 was first designed in 1939 and entered production in 1941. Originally known as the 155-mm Howitzer M1, it served during World War II and was later redesignated M114.
The M114 became the standard U.S. 155-mm towed howitzer during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Rock Island Arsenal assembled more than 10,000 of these howitzers between 1941 and 1953. Replacement by the newer M198 howitzer began in 1979.
