Historical Context
The 152mm M409A1 HEAT-MP-T Round was one of the most versatile and powerful anti-armor rounds used by the U.S. Army during the Cold War. It was developed for the M551 Sheridan Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle and the M60A2 “Starship” Main Battle Tank, both of which used a 152mm gun-launcher system capable of firing both conventional rounds and guided missiles (like the MGM-51 Shillelagh).
The M409A1 HEAT round was designed to defeat enemy armor using a shaped charge warhead, with additional capability against fortified positions thanks to its multi-purpose payload. It featured a combustible case (M157), which burned away completely upon firing, leaving no spent cartridge to extract—a key advantage for compact vehicle turrets. The tracer element allowed gunners to track their shots visually, aiding target acquisition and correction during combat.
