Description
INERT U.S. Navy Mk22 Mechanical Time Fuze for 3-Inch & 4-inch Naval Ammunition
Item Overview
Bring a distinctive piece of U.S. naval ordnance history to your collection with this INERT Mk22 Mechanical Time Fuze. Also known as the Mark 22, this nose-fuze design is documented in World War II Navy manuals and was used with naval anti-aircraft and illuminating ammunition. Its connection to shipboard gunnery makes it an appealing addition to a naval ammunition collection or military-history display.
Identification and Features
The Mk22 design combined a tapered nose, a graduated time-setting ring, and an internal clockwork mechanism. Rather than relying on a direct impact, its mechanical timer controlled when the projectile acted during flight. This distinguishes the Mk22 from an electronic proximity fuze, which responded to the presence of a nearby target.
Weapon Applications
The Mk22 family was used with anti-aircraft and illuminating projectiles for U.S. Navy 3"/50cal and 3"/23cal guns. Period references also document its use in selected 4"/50cal high-capacity ammunition. In anti-aircraft service, timed bursts allowed shells to act near an aircraft without requiring a direct hit. In illuminating ammunition, timed action released the flare carried inside the projectile.
Historical Background
During World War II, 3"/50cal guns served aboard many naval auxiliary vessels and merchant ships, providing an important means of defense against aircraft. Mechanical time fuzes formed part of the ammunition supporting that role. The Mk22 also represents a step in the development of more durable naval fuzes: the Navy introduced the Mk51 as a moisture-resistant version of the Mk22, improving protection for the delicate mechanism in the demanding marine environment.
