INERT Mark 60 Mod 0 Encapsulated Torpedo (CAPTOR) Mine.

Bring home one of the most distinctive Cold War naval artifacts: a professionally restored display example of the Mark 60 Encapsulated Torpedo (CAPTOR) mine. The Mk60 U.S. Navy deep-water anti-submarine mine; this inert/display unit is restored for museum-quality presentation. Photos shown depict a previously restored Dummy CAPTOR and are provided as a visual example only.

What the Mk 60 CAPTOR Was

Developed by the U.S. Navy as a moored, deep-water anti-submarine mine, the Mk 60 “CAPTOR” concealed a lightweight torpedo inside a pressure housing. Once its passive acoustic processors classified a hostile submarine, the mine released a modified Mk 46 torpedo to pursue and destroy the target—combining the persistence of a mine with the reach and homing of a torpedo. Operational introduction was in the late 1970s (commonly cited as 1979), and CAPTOR served through the Cold War and into the post–Cold War era.

How it worked (original system): positioned near the seafloor, the CAPTOR’s sensors “listened” for submarine signatures and, when preset criteria were met, jettisoned the encapsulated torpedo (Mk 46 Mod 6 variant) to actively home on the target. It could be deployed by aircraft, surface ships, or submarines and was designed for deep-water ASW barriers.

This Listing (Display/Dummy Unit)

  • Type: Restored inert/display Mk 60 CAPTOR mine (non-functional; no energetic components).
  • Finish: Museum-quality exterior restoration suitable for classroom, museum, or private collection display.
  • Use Case: Ideal centerpiece for naval history exhibits focused on Cold War ASW, seabed warfare, and mine/counter-mine evolution.

Note: Images show a previously restored example to illustrate finish and presence. The final delivered unit may vary slightly in markings or exterior.

Historical Significance

  • Hybrid mine-torpedo concept: the first widely fielded U.S. encapsulated torpedo mine, merging stealthy seabed presence with a homing torpedo’s lethality.
  • Mk 46 integration: CAPTOR employed a Mk 46 torpedo variant (Mod 6) adapted for encapsulated launch and ASW engagement.
  • Strategic role: laid in chokepoints and ocean barriers to deter or attrit adversary submarines during the height of East–West maritime competition.

Ideal For

  • Naval & military museums building Cold War ASW galleries
  • Collectors seeking rare U.S. Navy seabed-warfare artifacts
  • Film/educational displays requiring accurate large-format naval ordnance
