Bring a centerpiece of Cold War undersea warfare into your collection with this restored Mark 37 Mod 3 High Explosive warshot torpedo, built from an original U.S. Navy Mark 37 Mod 3 dummy/fitment torpedo body and professionally finished to represent a live Mod 3 warshot externally. This full-size heavyweight torpedo has been cosmetically restored with period-correct paint, markings, and warhead profile, giving you the look and presence of an operational weapon—while remaining completely inert and safe for static display.

The Mark 37 – Cold War Submarine Hunter

The Mark 37 was the U.S. Navy’s standard submarine-launched ASW (anti-submarine warfare) torpedo from the late 1950s through the 1960s, replacing many World War II–era designs. An electrically powered, active/passive acoustic homing torpedo, it used a silver-zinc battery driving a quiet, two-speed electric motor and could “swim out” of 21-inch submarine tubes instead of being ejected with high-pressure air, significantly reducing launch noise.

Key Mark 37 characteristics (warshot configuration):

  • Role: Submarine-launched ASW / anti-ship torpedo
  • Propulsion: Electric motor with Mark 46 silver-zinc battery
  • Guidance: Gyro-stabilized initial run, then passive sonar search, switching to Doppler active homing in the terminal phase
  • Warhead: Approx. 330 lb HBX-3 high explosive with a Mark 19 contact exploder
  • Dimensions: About 135 in length, 19 in diameter
  • Performance: Up to 23,000 yards at 17 knots or 10,000 yards at 26 knots, with operational depths to around 1,000 ft

More than 3,300 Mark 37 torpedoes were produced, and they served with the U.S. Navy and allied fleets (including Israel and the Royal Netherlands Navy) until progressively replaced by the Mark 48 beginning in the early 1970s.

Mod 3 – Updated Free-Running Warshot

The Mark 37 Mod 3 was an upgraded version of the original Mod 0 free-running torpedo. In the late 1960s, the Navy began refurbishing Mod 0 units into Mod 3 configuration, improving the acoustic homing system with piezoelectric transducers and updated electronics to extend target acquisition ranges (roughly from about 700 yards to 1,000 yards) and improve performance against small, quiet submarines.

Unlike the longer, heavier wire-guided Mod 1 / Mod 2 variants, the Mod 3 remained a non-wire-guided, electric homing torpedo, keeping the Mod 0’s general length and weight while benefiting from more capable sonar and improved reliability.

About This Specific Torpedo

  • Original U.S. Navy Dummy / Fitment Mark 37 Body
    • Built from an authentic Mark 37 dummy/fitment torpedo originally used for handling, loading drills, and tube fitment
    • Dimensions and mass closely reflect a live weapon
  • Restored to Mod 3 High-Explosive Warshot Appearance
    • Externally finished to represent a Mark 37 Mod 3 warshot torpedo,
    • Professionally repainted in period-appropriate colors with service-style stenciling and markings patterned after U.S. Navy heavyweight torpedoes of the era.
  • Completely Inert & Demilitarized
    • No explosive filler; warhead section is inert.
    • No live battery, no charged cells, no active electric motor, and no functional guidance electronics.
    • No fuel, no explosive train, and no ability to run or be launched—display-only hardware.

This gives you the true scale and silhouette of a Cold War heavyweight ASW torpedo in Mod 3 warshot configuration, while remaining suitable for museums, public spaces, and private collections.

Ideal For

  • Museum and educational exhibits on Cold War submarine warfare, ASW tactics, and heavyweight torpedo evolution
  • Submarine or torpedo-room dioramas, especially when paired with loading skids, tube faces, and training documentation
  • High-end private naval ordnance collections looking for a centerpiece piece with real Cold War hardware and presence
  • Film, television, or experiential venues needing a full-size, visually correct warshot torpedo without any of the hazards of live munitions

This restored Mark 37 Mod 3 High Explosive warshot torpedo, built from an original dummy fitment body, combines authentic U.S. Navy hardware, historically accurate Mod 3 warshot appearance, and a fully inert status, making it a standout anchor piece for any serious naval or Cold War collection.
