The 40mm M811 HEI projectile was developed for the L/70 Bofors autocannon, a Cold War-era evolution of the legendary WWII Bofors L/60. Firing the powerful 40x365mmR cartridge, the L/70 delivered significantly higher velocity and rate of fire—ideal for engaging fast-moving aircraft, drones, and lightly armored ground targets.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the U.S. Army adopted the Bofors L/70 as the primary weapon for the M247 Sergeant York, a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun system built on the M48 Patton chassis. The M811 HEI round was specifically tested for this system. Designed with a point-detonating fuze and an incendiary payload, the M811 was intended to destroy low-flying enemy aircraft with direct impact and fragmentation.
Though the Sgt. York program was ultimately canceled in 1985 due to technical and budgetary concerns, the system and its ammunition—including the M811—remain significant milestones in Cold War-era air defense development.
