Inert 20mm Mk149 Armor-Piercing Discarding-Sabot projectile, for use in the 20mm M61 and M197 electric rotary Gatling guns. This Mk149 round has a solid tungsten carbide penetrator that uses pure kinetic energy to push its way into, and destroy, its target. The density of tungsten carbide, over steel, makes it an ideal candidate for defeating targets. The primary use of the 20mm Mk149 round is in the 20mm M61 Vulcan, which is the heart of the Phalanx Close-In-Weapon-System (CIWS), or "Sea-Whiz". The Phalanx is a close-in weapon system for defense against anti-ship missiles. It was designed and manufactured by the General Dynamics Corporation, Pomona Division (now a part of Raytheon). Consisting of a radar-guided 20mm Vulcan cannon mounted on a swiveling base, the Phalanx has been used by multiple navies around the world, notably the United States Navy on every class of surface combat ship with the exception of the San Antonio class LPD, by the British Royal Navy on its older escorts (where weight prevents the use of the heavier Dutch Goalkeeper 30mm CIWS), and by the United States Coast Guard aboard its Hamilton and Legend-class cutters. The Phalanx is used by 16 other allied nations.
The heavy tungsten penetrator is contained within a white nylon sabot that peels away once the projectile leaves the muzzle, which allows the subcaliber penetrator continuing on to its target at close to 4000 feet per second!! This projectile is totally inert, and does not contain any energetic components. It is in new/mint condition.
